My history
I'VE BEEN THROUGH IT TOO
I am a first-generation Southeast Asian immigrant woman. I immigrated to the United States with my family as refugees when I was a little girl and survived war and persecution. Growing up as a young child, I endured poverty after my family arrived in the United States. My parents wanted a better life for me and encouraged me to go to college. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Immediately after graduation, I was hired for my first professional job.
But all that changed
Shortly after starting this job, I was diagnosed with a life-threatening medical illness: kidney failure. During that time, I was married with two young daughters when I learned of the medical diagnosis, and I was devastated. However, I didn’t give up. I knew in my heart that I would get better because I had a family who needed me.
I HAD A PASSION
I have always had a passion for helping people. While I started kidney dialysis, I decided to go to graduate school for my Master’s Degree in mental health counseling. Two years into my graduate program, I received a kidney transplant. One year after I received my kidney transplant, I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Science of Education in Community Mental Health Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
My second chance arrived
I feel so blessed with my life, even including the difficult times. These challenging moments have given me the strength to never surrender. Although my illness set back a few years with my personal and professional life, I persevered. I always had hope in my heart that things would get better and I can start a new chapter with my family and career.
For the past 23 years since I was given a second chance at life, I have been blessed to do all the things that I wanted to do. My two daughters have grown up to be amazing young women, and my husband and I celebrated 30 years of marriage in July 2023.
